HELP! Is this an addiction to Xanex, or just a weird panic attack? 10 points for best answer- please?!?

April 27, 2010

For a little less than a year, I was prescribed Xanex as needed at 0.5 mg- and then after about a month of realizing this didn’t work at all 1 mg. After a year of having bad panic attacks about weekly, I figured that the Xanex even at 1 mg didn’t seem to ever have helped much, as it never got rid of any of my panic attacks. I had also been on 1.5 mg of Clanazopam. When I saw my psychiatrist about a week ago, he changed my dosage to 2 mg of Xanex as needed and put me on Lorazopam. The Lorazopam didn’t seem to work, but the 2 mg of Xanex FINALLY took away my panic attacks, as well as made me pretty tired. After 3 or so days of taking Lorazopam without relief, I called my psychiatrist and he changed my dosage to 0.5 mg to 1 mg of Xanex every six hours, and the Lorazipam as needed. For about 4 days in total, I took 1 mg of Xanex every 6 hours, 1 mg of Lorazopam every eight hours, and would occasionally take 1 mg of Xanex if I felt I needed it due to a panic attack- which seemed to be taking place every other day to every day. Today, my doctor ordered in a different prescription that I haven’t started yet, but I didn’t take any anti-anxiety medication today (which, up until a week ago shouldn’t have normally made much of a difference). The last time I took Xanex was 2 mg last night around 9 or 10 pm. About two hours ago, I noticed that I started to feel anxious. We were doing "relay races" and I ran across a gym 3 or so times, though I never really exercise and that increased my heart-rate, thus increasing my anxiety. Within the timespan of 30 minutes, I realized that I became really unaware of what was going on around me, and I felt incredibly out-of-it- almost as though I had been drugged, though I am almost certain that is not the case, as before that I had just been at home. I didn’t really feel anxious until I realized that I couldn’t really realize what was going on around me, which I then associated as a symptom of a (bad) panic attack and after another 15 or so minutes, took 2 mg of Xanex. (This was around 4:30 pm.) The only thing, aside from that, was my racing heart. Normally, my panic attacks start out by either a racing heart or feeling nauseous (I am deathly afraid of throwing up), and result in me feeling either really hot or really cold, usually shaking, and after a while MAYBE feeling slightly out-of-it. Am I experiencing some kind of withdrawal to Xanex? Have I even taken it long enough to induce some kind of addiction? Sorry this is so long, but this really freaked me out and I could use ANY kind of help. Thank you all so much for any thing you have to add!!!!!
I should mention that I have only taken Xanex, less the 4 day span, as needed on top of ONE other benzodiazopene. I’ve never taken Clanazopam AND Lorazopam, etc. Just one "daily" medication, and Xanex p.r.n.

Yes, you Psychiatrist has you on several Meds doing the same thing. I was on 2mg Xanax for years it has a very short life span (this means how long it’s in your system), well, I also have OCD which has made my room a hoarders paradise, and I would lose the bottle in all my stuff, JUST 1 night without one was a nightmare, A minute seemed like an hour, felt like things under my skin, tremors, I mean Xanax can be pretty wicked in your body doesn’t get it’s dose. I finally just went back on Klonopin,it has a longer life span and you are less likely to suffer withdrawl, When I was on .05 mg of Lorazopam , I ended up in the ER one night, these can be really scary if your body is used to them, and then it has none, plus them putting you on several different kinds, and taking them away, Not Good. Actually, I have found nothing to relieve my anxiety when it is intense, you get used to the pills then they don;t help. Good Luck, look up your meds on WebMD. they are giving you too many
benzodiazepines, they all can cause withdrawl. And they are prescribed for the same condition, one on top of the other is ridiculous. Brown Eyes

This might not help you, but it sounds like you’re taking an awful lot of medication a lot of times a day. You should really be sure this is exactly what your doctor said to do.
